Cyclist Ernesto Escolano, from Sabiñánigo (Huesca), died on Monday of a heart attack while taking part in the Titan Desert 2022 in Morocco. The news of his death caused shock and indignation among the ranks of other runners and athletes.
Escolano was a loved and valued person in Huesca society. His death is a great loss for the Spanish cycling world. Voices were raised to denounce the conditions in which he died, leaving behind a widow and two children. The Honduran cyclist, Milton Ramos, residing in Sabiñánigo and a friend of Escolano, tells El Mundo that he tried to dissuade the latter from participating in this competition, given the high heat in the Moroccan desert and lack of humanism shown by the organizers.
Milton Ramos questioned the version of the organizers who indicated in a press release that the Aragonese was quickly transferred by helicopter to the Mohammed VI university hospital center in Marrakech, where he passed away. “It is completely false. We all know that he was taken by the health team at the end of the stage of day 2 and transferred to the hospital hours later…”, denounced Ramos, swearing that he will not participate in the Titan again Desert and inviting athletes who also had bad experiences during this Moroccan stage to tell their story.
“It seems like the only thing they care about is getting every last penny you have in your pocket, that’s why they even invented their own coin… Please let’s be reasonable and don’t try to live an adventure in a place where if you have an accident, you will have a bad time, ”added the runner, nicknamed the Desert Fox.
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, visiting Marrakech during the tragic incident, sent his “condolences” to the bereaved family and friends. Likewise, the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of Aragon, Felipe Faci, presented his “deepest condolences” to families and friends.
