Water Desalination: Morocco Launches Construction of Three Stations This Year

In order to cope with the shortage of drinking water, Morocco plans to build three new water desalination stations this year. The goal is to reach a production of one billion cubic meters by 2030.

The announcement was made in parliament by the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, specifying that these stations will be built in Casablanca, El Jadida, and Safi. Currently having 9 seawater desalination stations operational or under construction, with a capacity of 147 million cubic meters per year, Morocco will begin the construction of new stations to ensure at least 50% of the drinking water needs thanks to desalination, he said.

Planned in two phases, the Casablanca station will have a production capacity of 548,000 mยณ per day, or 200 million mยณ per year, according to the minister. “The first will be completed in June 2026, while the second is scheduled for 2030 and will bring the treatment of salt water to 300 million mยณ per year,” said the minister. This mega project will provide desalinated water for the irrigation of 5,000 ha covering Greater Casablanca, Berrechid-Settat, and El Jadida-Azemmour.

According to the Minister, it will also be launched this year, the construction works of the desalination stations of Safi with a production capacity of 86,400 mยณ / day and El Jadida with a capacity of 25 million mยณ /year, i.e. 75,800 mยณ/day. Added to this is the Oriental desalination plant. This project, which is still in the study phase, provides for a treatment capacity of 100 million mยณ that can be extended to 200 million mยณ and an envelope of more than 1.3 billion dirhams.
