The US Under Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf, described the situation in Tunisia as “extremely complicated”, recalling in another context that the possibility of a collapse of the State in Lebanon, “still exists”.
This is what emerges from his statements reported on Wednesday by the American channel Al-Hurra.
“The situation in Tunisia is very complex, “she said, noting that the United States “continues to provide assistance to Tunisia to maintain stability and protect American diplomatic missions.”
And the American official added that “the social space in Tunisia is under threat, due to pressure on activists, the media and diplomatic missions”.
On the other hand, Leaf referred to the situation in Lebanon, where the possibility of the collapse of the state “still exists”.
She stressed that Washington “is working with the Europeans to push the Lebanese Parliament to fulfill its duty to elect a president for the country”, according to the same source.
Regarding the resumption of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Leaf said that this agreement “is the result of Riyadh’s desire to end the war in Yemen and that China does not play it. no role”.
“The Saudi-Iranian deal will not affect our engagement with Gulf states, including Riyadh,” she said.
Last March, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced the resumption of their diplomatic relations after seven years of rupture.
