The American embassy in Algeria pays a vibrant tribute to the former head of Algerian diplomacy, Mohamed Seddik Benyahia.
On the occasion of the sad anniversary of the death of Seddik Benyahia, the United States embassy paid tribute to the former minister of foreign affairs, on its Facebook page, who died on May 3, 1982, in a plane crash on the Iranian-Turkish border.
On May 3, 1982, the former Algerian minister took his plane to try to find a peaceful solution to the Iran-Iraq war, but his plane was shot down in midair.
“America will forever be grateful to Benyahia and his fellow Algerian diplomats for facilitating the release of 52 us diplomats held hostage for 444 days after protesters stormed US embassy in Tehran”, wrote us embassy.
Elizabeth Aubin, new us ambassador to Algiers
As a reminder, US president Joe Biden has appointed Elizabeth Moore Aubin as us ambassador to Algeria. The announcement was made on April 15 in a statement posted on the white house website.
Note that Elizabeth Aubin is a former US embassy in Algiers. Between 2011 and 2014, she held the post of deputy head of mission at the US embassy in Algiers.
