Turkish Company Baykar Announces Drone Factory in Morocco

The Turkish company Baykar, led by Lutfu Haluk Bayraktar and Selรงuk Bayraktar, is expanding into drone manufacturing in Morocco.

Multiple reports, including those in Turkish media, have confirmed this new venture by the Turkish manufacturer Baykar, describing the drone project as a “significant” step for the Moroccan military and for Morocco-Turkey relations.

Moroccan media outlets have also covered the news, with Le360 reporting that the aerospace company has established Atlas Defense, a subsidiary under Baykar’s control.

The company’s primary activities will include drone manufacturing, design, and maintenance. With a branch in Rabat, the firm plans to design and assemble technological systems for the defense industry. This will cover various areas such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and communications.

Production will encompass electronic, optical, and mechanical equipment used in military operations.

In January, reports indicated that the Turkish defense company had confirmed the delivery of Bayraktar TB2 drones to Morocco. Further reports suggest that the Turkish company shipped drones in September 2021.

This move aligns with Morocco’s broader trend of modernizing its military with cutting-edge technologies from various international partners, primarily the United States.

Morocco is one of Africa’s largest arms buyers. The country’s military budget has increased to over 133 billion dirhams (approximately $13 billion).

The latest Global Firepower report published earlier this year ranks Morocco as the 59th most powerful military in the world out of 145 countries. Morocco also ranks seventh on the African continent, following Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Angola.

Baykar, led by Lutfu Haluk Bayraktar and Selรงuk Bayraktar – son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoฤŸan – has maintained close ties with Morocco for several years.
