The Deputy Head of Mission of the European Union Delegation in Tunisia, Francisco Acosta Soto, confirmed the issuance of a recommendation prohibiting Tunisians from entering European territory. The reason for this decision is the high number of contaminations and deaths due to Covid-19.

The official assured that until then, it remains a recommendation and not a decision, and the countries of the European Union are free to choose to interact with this recommendation or not.

In the same context, Francisco Acosta Soto added on Shems fm that the European Union will send to the Tunisian State the text of this recommendation accompanied by an explanatory document.

This recommendation would therefore be non-binding and European countries are free in this regard. As such, Germany has already reacted, explaining that no ban on access to German territory is currently applied to Tunisians , adding, however, that certain restrictions have been applied for several weeks due to epidemiological risks and that the recommendation of the EU is not a binding decision.

While waiting for reactions from other countries such as France, Italy, Spain or Belgium, for the time being, only Germany has been clear with this recommendation.

On Wednesday, European sources quoted by AFP announced that nationals of Canada, Tunisia and Georgia are now banned from entering the European Union, due to their epidemiological situation.

“Due to a sharp rise in cases of Covid-19 infection, Georgia, Canada and Tunisia have been removed from the list,” it was confirmed. “The procedure should be formally approved by Friday.”
