Minister for Industry, Mines and Energy Neila Nouira Gonji and Lord Tariq Ahmad, UK Minister of State for South Asia, North Africa, Commonwealth and United Nations Affairs, signed, on Tuesday in Tunis, a memorandum of understanding, under which Great Britain will grant Tunisia technical and financial support for the development of renewable energies.
During the signing ceremony, Gonji stressed the importance of this agreement which will allow “to benefit from British expertise in this field”, recalling in this same context that Tunisia has set up a program ambitious aiming to produce, from 2022 to 2025, up to 35% of our needs from renewable energies.
The UK is already the largest foreign investor in Tunisia’s energy sector, thanks to a previous memorandum of understanding signed more than 20 years ago, Lord Ahmad said.
“With our Tunisian partners, British companies have not only invested in energy production, but also in the Tunisian people,” the official said, saying that “this protocol reflects our shared commitment to building a partnership that protects the environment and creates jobs in Tunisia”.
The British Minister of State recalled that the United Kingdom provides Tunisia with technical assistance for the development of renewable energies and for its inclusion in multilateral initiatives, such as the climate action fund.
In the same context, he mentioned the progress made by his country in the field of renewable energies, recalling that the United Kingdom hosted the United Nations conference on climate change (COP26).
