Tunisia Tightens Entry Requirements: Passport Mandatory Starting 2025

Travelers planning a trip to Tunisia have a new requirement to be aware of. Beginning January 1, 2025, the Tunisian government will mandate that all visitors present a valid passport with at least three months of remaining validity.

This change marks a departure from previous practices, which allowed some European travelers to enter using national identity cards. However, starting next year, passports will be the sole accepted form of identification for entry into the country.

While the visa-free policy for stays under 90 days remains in effect, travelers must ensure their passports meet the new validity requirements to avoid potential complications at the border.

Temporary Flexibility:

Until the end of 2024, a limited exception will be in place for travelers who are part of organized group tours. They may still use a valid national identity card for foreign travel, provided they have a hotel reservation and round-trip tickets.

Important Considerations:

  • Original Documents Only: Photocopies, even certified ones, will not be accepted.
  • Risk of Refusal: Failure to comply with the passport requirements may result in denial of entry.
  • Strong Recommendation: The Italian Embassy strongly advises all travelers to have a valid passport to avoid any potential issues.

Official Guidance:

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Farnesina) emphasizes the importance of adhering to the new entry regulations. Travelers are strongly discouraged from attempting to enter Tunisia without the required documentation.
