Tunisia has been plunged into a deep political crisis for more than a year

The National Salvation Front (Tunisian opposition) called on Sunday for the formation of a national salvation government to deal with the country’s economic and social problems.

“The economic and social crises are getting worse day by day, and for a year and a half, there has been no sign of an end to these problems,” Front leader Ahmed Nejib Chebbi told a rally in the governorate of Tataouine (South).

“The solution to these crises is fundamentally political and requires the formation of a salvation government,” he added.

Chebbi accused Tunisian President Kais Saied of undermining the country’s democratic institutions.

“The government claims that an agreement with the IMF will solve Tunisia’s problems, but that is not true,” he said.

Tunisia struck a preliminary deal with the IMF earlier this month for a $1.9 billion rescue package that is expected to be finalized in December.

Tunisia is in the grip of a deep political crisis and has seen its economic situation worsen since last year when Saïed replaced the government and dissolved the parliament.

While Saïed insists his measures were meant to “save” the country, his critics have accused him of orchestrating a coup.
