“Our country welcomes our African brothers and wants to treat them humanely, but will not allow the presence of people outside the law on its soil.”
This was stated by the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, during his meeting, Friday, August 9, 2024, at the Carthage Palace, with Léon Kacou Adom, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Ivorians Abroad.
Regarding this issue of irregular migration, which now seems to be at the heart of Tunisia’s relations with sub-Saharan African countries, the Head of State remained firm in his rejection of the settlement of migrants on Tunisian soil, stressing the need to adopt a global and consensual approach to irregular migration, in order to put an end to this phenomenon, eliminate its root causes and tackle the criminal networks of human trafficking that are at its origin, according to the press release published by the Presidency of the Republic at the end of the meeting.
Tunisia is proud of its African affiliation and seeks to further strengthen relations of fraternity, cooperation and partnership with African countries, in a bilateral and multilateral framework, in the interest of the peoples of the continent, said Saïed, adding that Africa has enormous human and natural resources that would enable its peoples to meet the economic and social challenges they face, thus suggesting that migration cannot be the ideal solution for African youth, including Tunisian, who are also inclined towards this false solution to a real problem.
