Tunisia: Rescue of 99 Illegal Immigrants

Units of the Tunisian navy rescued, on Tuesday, 99 illegal migrants of African and Asian nationalities in the south of the country.

This is what emerges from a press release from the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, examined by the Anadolu Agency.

“Navy units managed on Tuesday to locate and rescue 99 illegal migrants of African and Bengali nationalities, who were on board a damaged boat northeast of el-Ktef (governorate of Medenine) from the Libyan coast,” the Tunisian Defense Ministry said.

The statement added that “among the illegal migrants, 33 people were from Egypt, 64 from Bangladesh, and 2 from Morocco”.

Tunisia has recently experienced an alarming escalation in the rate of migration to Europe, and more particularly to the Italian coast, due to the repercussions of the economic and political crises in the country.

At an almost daily rate, attempts at illegal immigration are thwarted and hundreds of people are arrested by the security forces and the army in Tunisia.
