The 23rd Theatrical Days of Carthage (JTC) opened on Saturday night in Tunis, with the participation of 23 countries, including Morocco, present in the official selection with the theatrical play “Les jardins secrets” by Mohamed El Hor.
The play by the Akoun troupe tells the story of a young girl who belongs to a well-to-do and modern family. Her parents forced her to marry a man she did not know. She refuses this alliance because she had a love affair with another person, which caused a disagreement between the parents, resentment and deep grief for the girl, which drove her to suicide.
Are in the running for the Golden Tanit of these days, alongside this theatrical play, the Tunisian plays “Emittance” by Taher Issa Ben Larbi and “Dark Side” by Nizar Saidi, “The eagle finds its wings” by Walid Omar Boubaker (Sudan), “Chams and Majd” by “Oussama Ghannam” (Syria), “Antigone” by Okbaoui Cheikh (Algeria), “Les Bijoux” by William Sham Weteshe (DRC), “Bercail” by Arona Ba (Senegal ), “Eizdan” by Mohannad Ali Hamid (Iraq), “Hamlet Inside Out” by Mazan Gharbaoui (Egypt), “Mine-terre” by Georges Ibrahim (Palestine) and “Know how to prepare a cocktail” by Jana Bou Matar (Lebanon) . The official competition jury chaired by Tunisian Leila Toubel is made up of Lina Abyadh (Lebanon), Youssef Al Hamdan (Bahrain), Falah Chaker (Iraq), Abdelwaheb Mabrouk (Tunisia) and José Mena Abrantes (Angola).
The JTC program also presents 31 plays out of competition including 12 world theater plays, 4 amateur plays and 7 children’s plays and 8 street performances. During the opening, a tribute was paid to the Tunisians Salwa Mohamed, Mohamed Yangui and Alaeddine Ayoub, to the Egyptian Souhir Morchedi, to the Syrian Ayman Zaydan, to the Iraqi Kacem Bayatli and to the Malian Habib Dembélé.
Posthumous tributes were paid to Hichem Rostom, actor, director, director and former director of JTC, as well as actors Tawfik Bahri, Sadok Mejri, Mongi Tounsi, Ismail Bouslama, Bechir Khamouma and plastic artist Adel Megdiche.
The festival created in 1983 continues its journey, in this edition placed under the sign of the party, through a variety of shows distributed between the City and several spaces of the capital.
Senegal is the guest of honor at this 23rd session, which pays tribute to a theater in particular of French expression and to a great figure of Senegal and the African continent Léopold Sédar Senghor.
