Tunisia – Major Development Guidelines: Kaïs Saïed Calls for a Total Break With the Past

Kamel Maddouri, the head of government, was received in the audience at the Carthage Palace on Monday, September 23, 2024, by the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed.

On this occasion, the Head of State requested that the Document on the broad guidelines for development break with the past, both in terms of its title and content.

He indicated that “some have been talking for decades about a new development model without ever achieving it, because, in reality, they want to perpetuate choices that aggravate economic and social disparities and inequalities,” read a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.

Therefore, the President of the Republic affirmed that, from now on, Tunisia needs new concepts to replace slogans and terms that are no longer valid.

In addition, the hearing allowed us to examine the draft law on public procurement of projects of strategic importance. In this regard, the President of the Republic considered that the legislation in force is outdated and has caused losses to the national community.

“Tens of trillions have been allocated to projects whose work never saw the light of day or was interrupted shortly after their launch,” the head of state stressed, quoted in the same press release.

As a reminder, a restricted ministerial council, held on Saturday, September 21 at the government palace in La Kasbah, was devoted to examining the draft decree establishing the specific provisions relating to the implementation of major public projects of a strategic nature.
