The Tunisian government has taken concrete measures to accelerate the implementation of the biometric national identity card and passport during the first half of 2025.
These decisions were taken during a ministerial working session held Monday at the Government Palace in Kasbah, chaired by the head of government, Ahmed Hachani.
This meeting, attended by the Ministers of the Interior, Finance, Economy and Planning, as well as Communication Technologies, was devoted to the continued examination of the identity card project and biometric passport.
A steering committee specially created for this project issued this decision, after an in-depth discussion process on the proposals and hypotheses relating to the technical and logistical aspects of the issuance of these biometric documents.
The objective of these measures is to carefully select the best method of issuing these official documents, so that Tunisian citizens, whether they reside in Tunisia or abroad, can fully benefit from them, in accordance with organic laws. Nos. 22 and 23 of 2024 relating to the biometric identity card and passport.
Furthermore, this decision aims to respond to the recommendation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which encourages countries around the world to adopt these biometric documents by 2026.
ICAO, a United Nations agency responsible for standardizing international air transport standards, supports this transition to biometrics to enhance security and facilitate border procedures.
