Tunisia: Energy Trade Deficit Worsens by 27%

The energy trade balance deficit, including the royalty on exported Algerian gas, increased by 27% at the end of July 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 6,700 million dinars (MD), according to a report by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines concerning the month of July 2024.

Exports of energy products recorded a 9% increase in value, while imports increased by 22%.

Trade in the energy sector is strongly influenced by three main factors: the quantities traded, the exchange rate between the dollar and the dollar, and Brent prices.

In July 2024, the price of Brent increased by $5/barrel (bbl) compared to July 2023. It is worth remembering that one barrel (bbl) is approximately 158.98 liters.

During the same period, the Tunisian dollar depreciated by 1% against the US dollar, the main currency used for trading energy products, compared to the same period last year.

It is also worth noting that gas prices started to increase from October 2023, before experiencing a slight decrease in March 2024.
