Tunisia: Ebrd Reaffirms Its Support for the Energy Transition and Key Industrial Projects

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has reaffirmed its continued support for key projects overseen by the Tunisian Ministry of Industry. These projects include the electricity interconnection between Tunisia and Italy; as well as support for various energy transition programs.

This commitment was confirmed by Nodira Mansurova, head of the EBRD office in Tunisia, during a meeting with the Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub.

The latter stressed the importance of EBRD support to improve the performance of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) and to help the industrial sector in its decarbonization efforts. The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore possibilities for new collaborations with the ministry’s departments.

In 2021, the EBRD granted a loan of 300 million euros to STEG to implement a program of financial and technical reforms, accompanied by a grant of 22.5 million euros from the European Union and another of 1.5 million euros from Switzerland, intended to create a new IT management system to digitalize services and develop the electricity transmission network.

Discussions also focused on potential cooperation in the chemical fertilizer sector, the valorization of phosphogypsum, and the development of public-private partnerships in the mining sector.
