Tunisia: Coast guard saves 113 irregular migrants in the east of the country

Maritime units managed to save 113 illegal migrants, of several African nationalities in addition to a number of Tunisians, after the sinking of their boat.

According to the spokesperson for the Tunisian National Guard, Houcemeddine Jbabli, these migrants were trying to cross illegally to the Italian coast.

Mr. Jbabli said in a statement, a copy of which was received by the Xinhua agency on Monday evening, that units of the coast guard of the two provinces of Sfax and Mahdia (East) in cooperation with the sea force, were able to rescue the 113 people who were on board a boat, about to run aground in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Among the survivors are 65 women and 9 children, in addition to 5 Tunisians, from the two provinces of Sfax and Sousse.

They were transferred to the port of Sfax to complete the legal proceedings against them, where the prosecution ordered them to be charged with “forming an agreement to surreptitiously cross the maritime borders” of the country.

This is a social phenomenon which continues to grow in view of the high number of attempts at irregular migration to the Italian coasts from the Tunisian coast.
