Tunisian President Kais Saïed discussed, on Tuesday, with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, the causes of irregular migration in order to stem it.
This is what emerges from a telephone conversation between the two parties, according to a press release from the Tunisian Presidency.
Saïed stressed “the need to complete the path that began in Rome with a joint initiative between Tunisia and Italy, and which will continue in the next stage in Tunisia, to collectively tackle the causes of irregular migration, in order to put an end to this human tragedy.”
According to the press release, the two parties reviewed “the coordination operations between Tunisia and Italy in the face of the exacerbation of the continuous flow of irregular migrants, as well as the origin of criminal networks of human trafficking” .
On July 23, Rome hosted the activities of the International Conference on Development and Irregular Migration, in the presence of leaders of Mediterranean countries in Rome, in order to address the irregular flow of migrants and develop Africa.
On the 16th of the same month, the Tunisian Presidency announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the European Union on the “strategic and global partnership” between the two parties in areas such as the promotion of trade and the fight against irregular migration, worth more than 750 million euros (approximately $834 million).
The Tunisian president has repeatedly called for the establishment of international cooperation to deal with the growing rate of irregular migration, stressing that “local solutions cannot be found to this phenomenon.”
In recent months, the pace of irregular migration to Europe via Tunisia has accelerated, due to the repercussions of the economic and political crises experienced by countries in the region, which have prompted them to call on the international community to take decisive measures to curb this phenomenon of irregular migration.
