Tunisian Minister of Trade and Export Development, Samir Abid, announced the development of a joint plan with Libya and Algeria to enhance border regions and eliminate parallel trade and smuggling.
This statement came in response to a parliamentary question raised on March 26, 2025, by MP Abdessattar Zarai during a session at the Chamber of Representatives, addressing parallel trade and the establishment of free zones.
Abid explained that Tunisian authorities are working on a comprehensive and effective strategy to tackle parallel trade and mitigate its negative impact on the national economy. He emphasized the importance of strengthening communication with young people, raising awareness about the risks of the informal economy, and highlighting their potential contribution to regional development.
The minister highlighted that the border region of Ben Guerdane with Libya is a key focus of this initiative. The ministry aims to transform it into an attractive investment zone that generates wealth and creates job opportunities.
Additionally, Abid revealed that a joint plan with Algeria and Libya is currently being developed. This plan seeks to develop border areas, turning them into prosperous regions that provide decent living conditions and employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.
