Tunisia: A Floating Solar Power Plant at Berges du Lac 3

The first floating solar power plant in the Mena zone located at Berges du Lac 3, in Tunis, went into operation on Saturday, June 25, 2022, with the aim of covering part of the energy needs of the Goulette district.

With a power of 200 kWp, the equivalent of the consumption of 130 households, the plant covers an overall area of โ€‹โ€‹2500 m2. It will supply 265 MWh per year and contribute to reducing 120 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.

Funded to the tune of 500,000 euros by the General Directorate of the Treasury, under the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Recovery, this plant is being built by the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Steg) in partnership with the international renewable electricity production group Qair.

This project, whose work was launched on September 22, 2021, was created under a partnership agreement signed by Steg and the French developer of renewable energy projects Qair.

The construction of this station reflects Tunisia’s potential in terms of alternative energy production in the desert or in arid areas, indicated at the inauguration, the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines , Neila Gongi.

“Tunisia is determined to develop the renewable energy sector despite the delay it has experienced,” said the minister, recalling that the target is to reach a 35% share of renewable energies in the national energy mix. by 2030. This rate is currently minus 5%. We measure the path which, beyond the declarations of intentions and the announcement effects, still remains to be done.

All renewable energy projects will be connected to the electricity network at Steg, including the Tataouine and Matmata projects, as promised for his part, the director of the central distribution management at Steg, Nรฉjib Chtourou in a declaration to the Tap agency.

The managing director of Qair, Jรฉrรดme Billerey stressed that his group is ready to accompany Tunisia during its energy transition and to support it by launching other projects.
