The summer of 2022 will be marked by the return of members of the Algerian community established abroad with the strengthening of flight and crossing programs. This long-awaited return, however, does not look very easy.
Algerians abroad are indeed encountering several difficulties in organizing their trips to the country this summer. For several weeks, there have been constant complaints of administrative delays when renewing passports, the lack of air and sea services, soaring prices, and problems with reservations, particularly at Algérie Ferries.
But the worries of Algerian travelers also arise upon their arrival, especially at the ports. Sometimes, they are called upon to pay bribes to officials, in return for services, which often fall under their rights as travelers and citizens.
This is a point discussed at the press conference organized Tuesday, May 24 at the Foreign Affairs Committee of the APN. And it was the deputy of the diaspora of the 4th region, Brahim Dekhinet, who raised the question of “certain corrupt officials” at the level of the ports.
Indeed, he immediately underlined that “members of the diaspora love their countries in an incredible way. They come to spend their money and create social balance in their countries”. However, the reception reserved for them at the ports still poses a problem, according to him.
“The problem of corruption in the ports does not lie at the level of the managers”
In this regard, he explained that the problem of petty corruption at the port level does not lie at the level of the managers, but rather at the level of the ordinary employees. “These practices do not come from those responsible,” he noted.
These corrupt agents justify these practices, according to the same speaker, by saying that they want to “work to recover the two years (of absence due to the health crisis, editor’s note)”. “But how can we hope to recover at the expense of the Algerians? asked the MP.
On the other hand, Brahim Dekhinet maintained that there are all the same “mere employees who love their country”. They are also the ones who “provide information” on which “we based the investigations” carried out by the deputies themselves on the ground.
In the same vein, the elected official reported on the investigations he carried out on the ground in the company of other emigration deputies. Reports have been sent to “decision-makers” in order to put an end to these practices, of which members of the Algerian community abroad are victims.
