The volume of trade between Algeria and Mauritania increased by 82% during the year 2023. These are the data communicated by the Algerian Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni.
This is what he declared in a speech delivered yesterday at the opening of the Forum of Algerian-Mauritanian Businessmen. He was accompanied by his Mauritanian counterpart Lamrabet Oueld Panahi, in the Algerian town of Tindouf.
Mr. Zitouni also underlined that trade between the two countries amounted to $414 million in 2023, compared to $297 million in 2022, reports the Algerian press agency.
He added that the value of non-fuel exports to Mauritania amounted to more than $62 million in 2023. An increase of 51% year-on-year.
While Algerian imports from Mauritania during the same period amounted to more than 349 million dollars. After recording approximately $183 million in 2022, an increase of more than 91%.
For four years, Algerian-Mauritanian relations have experienced growing dynamics. With the launch of several projects that lay the foundations of a common infrastructure paving the way for investments leading to economic integration.
Thus, on February 22, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani inaugurated the first land crossing linking the two neighboring countries.
The two presidents also gave the signal for the start of work on a land road linking the Mauritanian town of Zouerate to Tindouf, in the southwest of Algeria, over a length of more than 700 kilometers.
In this regard, note that Mauritania and Algeria are connected by a land border approximately 460 kilometers long. However, numerous smuggling and illegal trade networks are active on their borders.
