The Tunisian startup nextProtein is now registered with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and could thus market its products on the US market, the young company announced last week.
Founded in 2015 by Syrine Chaalala and Mohamed Gastli, nextProtein specializes in the production of animal feed components from insects. It was launched with the aim of helping to combat land and resource scarcity by using insect protein as a raw material.
The company has set itself the task of providing a solution to the problem of food waste through the development of research and development for better management of food waste and its reintegration into the food chain in a circular economy approach.
Its registration with the FDA marks another important step in the start-up’s journey towards standards of excellence, the start-up said on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in a press release, reiterating its commitment to ensuring the highest level of safety and quality.
Operating from both France and Tunisia, nextProtein has received approval to market its insect products in the European Union (EU) in 2020, becoming the first insect breeding company to produce outside the EU.
In November 2022, nextProtein was honored by the head of government, Najla Bouden, along with 7 other innovative startups. It also received the “Forum économique de la Francophonie Djerba 2022” prize for the 3 best startups with the most potential to be the next Tunisian unicorn.
