The Marrakech International Film Festival Unveils the Official Selection of Films

From November 11 to 19, the Marrakech International Film Festival will showcase a wide range of films representing cinematic experiences from around the world. 76 films from 33 countries will be screened in the different sections of the festival: official competition, festive screenings, special screenings, eleventh continent, cinema panorama Moroccan cinema, emerging cinema, shows in Jemaa El Fna square and films presented as part of the honors.

In accordance with the direction chosen by the clown, the official competition will present a set of feature films, first or second, for their directors, aimed at revealing and promoting the new talents of world cinema. Among the 14 films selected to participate in the competition this year, there are ten feature films, the first for their female directors, and six films directed by female directors.

Films from 14 different countries, including two films from Latin America (Brazil and Mexico), three films from Europe (France, Portugal and Switzerland), four films from the Middle East and Africa (MENA) or directors from this region (Morocco, Sweden/Somalia, Syria, Tunisia), as well as films from Australia, Canada, Iran, Indonesia and Turkey.

The films nominated for the festival’s Golden Star allow you to explore different cinematographic genres, from fantasy films to detective films (film noir), through historical films, social dramas, thrillers or melodramas, as well as to deal with subjects reflecting the concerns of the younger generation throughout the world; Like the question of identity construction and the search for imitable models, the place of women in contemporary societies, but also questions of transition, whether they are linked to customs and traditions, or to political heritage, or to matter of love.

The Festival Shows section will premiere a series of films by international directors such as James Gray (The Time of Armageddon), Neil Jordan (Marlowe), Tarek Saleh (Born from Heaven) and Paul Schrader (The Master Gardener), in addition to the films that have shaped the event on the international film scene. , including the Palestinian comedy-drama (Mediterranean Fever), the thriller (Syndicate) with Isabelle Huppert, as well as the British-Egyptian film (The Two Swimmers), which tells the true story of two swimming sisters who managed to escape from Syria to compete in the 2016 Olympics.

The programming of the Special Shows section includes fifteen contemporary films from different countries, such as Iceland, India and South Korea. Films by directors acclaimed by critics or at major international festivals, such as Alice Diop, Joanna Hogg, Marie Kreutzer, Jaafar Panahi, but also Fatih Akin and Philip Focon who shot their films in Morocco.

The Eleventh Continent section offers audacious films that creatively address strong themes. A program that includes twelve feature films, documentaries and archival films, opening the dialogue between contemporary international cinema (Paraguay, Brazil, Lebanon, Spain, Rwanda, etc.), in addition to two classic films considered pioneering films in Arabic and African cinema, which will be presented in two restored versions.

The Panorama section of Moroccan cinema will present a selection of five feature films and documentaries from the latest national film productions. Moroccan cinema will be strongly present during this session, with a total of fifteen films that will participate in the different sections of the festival.

In order to educate the public of tomorrow, the cinema program for young audiences will be an opportunity for students to discover cinema through nine special screenings in this category.

The performances in Jamaรข El Fna Square will allow the festival to convey the atmosphere of the festival in the heart of the city of Marrakech through the programming of popular films in the presence of personalities of the seventh art, such as Anura Jakkashyap, who will present his latest film, What looks like love, world premiere of this film.

Finally, at the Palais des Congrรจs, at the Colisei Cinema and at the Djemaa El Fna square, films by personalities from international and Moroccan cinema will be screened for whom the festival will be dedicated in honor of this edition.

Films complete this diverse collection, which includes a total of seventy-six films.
