Strike in Algeria Post: The postman who challenged the “suspended” minister

The employee of Algeria Post, Brahim Boumzar, whose exchange with the Minister of Post and Telecommunications on the demands of the strikers had made the rounds of the web, said to have been suspended from his work.

Through a video broadcast live Saturday on his personal account on Facebook, the employee, Zaoui Abderahmane, informed of his suspension.

“I expected that. I just left work to go home. My colleagues called me to inform me that they received the order or the decision of my suspension”, he declared in the afternoon of yesterday.

For the employee, the reason for his dismissal certainly comes down to the exchange he had with the minister and which was filmed and widely disseminated on social networks.

“Why was I suspended? Because I told the truth. Because we wanted to preserve the dignity of the postman who has become a beggar while working in the largest national company”, he denounced.

“You are not part of the sector”

The exchange between Zaoui Abderahmane and Brahim Mouazer took place on Tuesday, April 13, ie the second day of the postmen’s walkout. The minister, who went to a post office in Algiers to learn about the strikers’ demands, was arrested by the postman who spoke in place of his colleagues.

“You are not part of the sector. You have been appointed to lead a political period. Tomorrow you could be the head of the Ministry of Commerce or Finance. The postal sector must be represented by its own,” the employee told the minister.

And to add: “You say that you are going to help us. You can not. To do this you have to be neutral. Those who can help us are legitimate representatives known to employees and not chosen by management ”.

Thus, the postman stands up to the minister for several minutes before the latter interrupts him by accusing him of wanting to campaign.

“We haven’t been campaigning. We are here to listen to the demands. You are filming. It does not work like that ”, the minister got angry.

“I am here to listen to all the employees. Not just you ”, he added before Zaoui Abderrahmane’s colleagues corrected him by telling him that it was they who appointed him to speak for them.

But even at the insistence of the employees, the minister refused to listen to him anymore. “A lot of people like you have already spoken after they come to negotiate to claim cars. You want to campaign, ” said the minister once again leaving the post office.

Surprise release

Employees of the postal sector began a surprise strike on April 12 to voice their demands relating, among other things, to the profit-sharing bonus and individual and collective bonuses. Since then, the employees have been in a standoff with the general management, pushing the latter to have recourse to justice to declare “the strike illegal” and threaten the strikers with dismissal “without notice or compensation”.

Yesterday, the general manager announced the adoption of certain measures to satisfy the demands of the employees after declaring the end of the strike and the return to normal of activity in the post offices. However, strikers for their part announced the continuation of their movement.
