The Spanish government on Tuesday approved the granting to Morocco of a loan of 5 million euros for the construction of two seawater desalination plants in the towns of Assa Zag and Moulay Brahim.
This credit, approved by the Council of Ministers, will be granted through the Fund for the internationalization of the company to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), indicates the Presidency of the Spanish government.
The project is part of the development of a priority sector for the internationalization strategy of the Spanish economy, in this case water, in which Spanish companies have a great experience, adds the same source in a statement.
Aware of the challenges linked to securing the water supply and of the need to mobilize other ” unconventional ” resources, Morocco has for years turned to seawater desalination with a view to meet the water needs in cities experiencing water stress.
Already in 1973, the National Master Plan for the Supply of Drinking Water highlighted the need for the desalination of brackish water and seawater as a solution for the supply of drinking water.
Since then, the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has carried out several projects relating to the construction, operation and maintenance of desalination plants, mainly in the southern provinces, for reasons of aridity of the climate, the scarcity of conventional water resources, but also the availability of seawater resources and the competitiveness, in terms of cost, of desalination compared to other means of supplying drinking water .
