Saharan Tourism: More and More Foreigners Attracted to Southern Algeria

Algeria, a long-overlooked tourism giant, is drawing a growing number of international travelers seeking authentic experiences away from traditional tourist circuits and luxury hotel complexes. Hereโ€™s the number of foreign visitors to Algeriaโ€™s Grand South in the first quarter of the 2024/2025 tourism season.

Speaking on national radio, Saliha Nacer Bey, Director General of the National Tourism Office, revealed the number of foreign tourists who chose to visit the Algerian Sahara during the first quarter of the 2024/2025 season.

22,700 Foreign Tourists Visited the Algerian Sahara in Q1 2024/2025
In an initial assessment of Algeriaโ€™s tourism performance for the first quarter, Saliha Nacer Bey announced that this season has been exceptional, with an estimated 186,000 total visitors, including over 22,700 foreign tourists.

โ€œThis is an exceptional season for Saharan tourism. For the first time, weโ€™ve recorded a significant influx of domestic and international tourists, not only visiting well-known regions like Tamanrasset, Adrar, and Timimoun but also extending to 24 wilayas in the Grand South,โ€ she stated.

According to the official, Algeria is now heavily investing in promoting Saharan tourism as a key driver of the national economy and a critical part of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicraftsโ€™ strategy.

Increased Investment in Infrastructure and Travel Agencies
Saliha Nacer Bey explained that these positive results stem from a series of promotional efforts and investments. She highlighted a significant rise in tourist numbers in 2024, reaching 3,548,000 visitors, including over 2,454,000 foreign tourists and more than 1,093,000 Algerian expatriates and residents abroad.

The growth is attributed to Algeriaโ€™s promotion as a tourist destination, particularly through international events. Investments in the hospitality sector include the opening of 47 new establishments, adding 4,600 beds to the accommodation capacity.

The state is also encouraging local initiatives, such as converting homes into tourist accommodations, especially in southern Algeria. This momentum has led to job creation, not only in hospitality but also in related sectors. The number of travel agencies has increased, with 571 new agencies launched. The goal is to develop sustainable, environmentally friendly tourism while prioritizing light infrastructure.
