The Italian Embassy in Algeria has announced a new revolution in the Schengen visa application process for Italy. In a press release published this Thursday, December 7, a “facial recognition” procedure was unveiled, aimed at facilitating access to visa application appointments while eliminating the use of intermediaries who are often costly for visa applicants.
A Revolutionary Innovation
The announcement of this new procedure was greeted with enthusiasm by Algerian visa applicants. From now on, appointment booking for tourist and business visa applications will be based on the facial recognition function. This innovation will be gradually implemented in the 6 application submission centers across Algeria, notably in Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba, Ghardaïa, and Adrar, as well as at the mobile center located in Bejaïa.
The Italian Ambassador to Algeria, Giovanni Polizzi, presented this initiative during his official announcement. He explained that this new procedure is part of a global strategy aimed at guaranteeing a greater degree of security and transparency throughout the visa application process for Algerian nationals. Additionally, it aims to discourage visa applicants from using paid services offered by intermediaries, such as Internet cafes and local travel agencies.
Ending Intermediary Practices
One of the main motivations behind this initiative is to put an end to the practices of middlemen who take advantage of visa applicants by charging them high fees for assistance in the application process. These intermediaries are often seen as a solution to bypass complex procedures and long waits to obtain a visa application appointment.
To counter this problem, the Italian Embassy in Algeria collaborated with the relevant offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and entrusted responsibility for the development of this new mechanism to the company VFS Global. This company was tasked with implementing a “facial recognition” system to ensure more accurate identification of the visa applicant.
A Simplified Procedure
The new procedure is relatively simple and quick, taking about 20 minutes in total. It consists of taking a “selfie” photo of the visa applicant. This photo is then recorded on an electronic portal specially designed for this purpose while respecting the regulations and legislation of the European Union regarding the protection of personal data. This photo is also included in the appointment receipt, which is issued electronically to the applicant.
When submitting the file to the VFS Global Center, this electronic receipt will serve as proof of registration. This new method aims to simplify the visa application process while reducing costs and providing increased transparency.
