Resumption of Rail Service between Tunisia and Algeria: A Trade Agreement Signed

A trade agreement has been signed between Tunisia and Algeria for the resumption of the rail link service, interrupted for more than two decades. This agreement marks an important step in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting regional cooperation.

According to the Algerian newspaper Echorouk, the agreement concluded includes various provisions aimed at relaunching the railway service “as soon as possible”. This agreement follows a series of technical meetings between the railway officials of the two countries, demonstrating their common desire to realize this long-awaited project.

To ensure the viability of the project, tests were conducted on the line connecting the stations of Souk Ahras in Algeria and Ghardimaou in Tunisia. A first test without passengers took place last month, followed by a second last week. These tests made it possible to check the condition of the railway network, which is more than 357 kilometers long, and to identify any necessary development work.

Algerian and Tunisian authorities are optimistic about the imminent resumption of the rail service. According to the Algerian National Railway Transport Company (SNTF), “infrastructure development work is progressing at a rapid pace” to allow implementation “as soon as possible”.

The resumption of rail traffic between Tunisia and Algeria is excellent news for the populations of both countries. It will facilitate travel, stimulate trade, and promote the development of tourism. This new link will also help relieve road congestion and reduce the carbon footprint of transport in the region.
