BEIRUT- The Council of the Nation highlighted Monday, in Beirut, the importance of tolerance, a principle on which Algeria has relied to face terrorism and in its external relations through its successful mediation for the settlement of various conflicts in the Arab region and Africa.

In a speech in a three-day workshop in Beirut on โ€œdiversity and toleranceโ€ย in the region of the Middle East and North Africa, senator Miloud Chorfi said that tolerance is a ย moral and humanitarian principle on which civilizations were built and advocated by all religions, is โ€œnow almost non-existent within societies and international relations.โ€

Underlining that Algeria has adopted this principle in its domestic policy and in its foreign relations, notably as part of the good governance of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, he said that โ€œit counted on tolerance in its confrontation of terrorism and worked for the preservation of the cohesion of society through the promotion of the values of tolerance, solidarity and the acceptance of divergence.โ€

Chorfi said that President Bouteflika counted on the values of peace, tolerance and reconciliation through an approach โ€œwhich has shown their effectiveness in the establishment of peace and security and the preservation of national unity.โ€ Thus, he added, โ€œhe succeeded in overcoming terrorism, releasing energies by guiding them towards development and progress.โ€
