President Bouteflika calls to speed up setting up of regulatory authority for written press

ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika called on the corporation of the written press and the concerned public authorities to work together to speed up the setting up of the regulatory authority for written press.

โ€œI seize this opportunity to call on the corporation of the written press and the concerned public authorities to work together to speed up the setting up of the regulatory authority for the written press, stipulated by the law,โ€ said President Bouteflika in a message on the eve of the celebration of the National Press Day, celebrated every year on 22 October.

The Head of State expressed the hope that this body โ€œbe a space to establish more understanding between the government and the written press and improve its performance not only in terms of freedom of opinion, diversity of ideas and convictions but also for the consolidation of the certainty that we are one people and that we do not have another nation than Algeria regardless of our persuasions.โ€

President of the Republic said that โ€œAlgeria has adopted a legislation of which we can be proud, allowing our country to have an important position in terms of recognition and enshrinement of the freedom of the press.โ€

โ€œAl these gains, newly instituted or formally confirmed by the constitutional amendment, aim at consolidating the positive steps towards the establishment of the Code of Information, notably the setting up of the regulatory authority for the audio-visual (ARAV),โ€ said President of the Republic.

President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika affirmed Friday that the electronic media is a challenge for the national press and all Algeria.

โ€œI would like to seize this opportunity to broach, for the first time, an issue which is a fundamental challenge for the Algerian press and for all Algeria, which is the electronic media which dominates today all the world,โ€ said the Head of State in a message on the occasion of the celebration of the National Press Day.

For President Bouteflika, it is a challenge for the national media and especially for the written press as it, for example, reduces its market.

โ€œIt is a challenge for all Algeria because it (the electronic media) often comes from foreign countries and allows spreading slanderous and abusive insinuations, disseminating subversive ideas to openly attack our people and country,โ€ said President Bouteflika.

The Head of State, who underlined that the electronic media โ€œhas become the subject of reflection for its regulation in other countries,โ€ hoped that โ€œjournalists, Stateโ€™s officials and the civil society can think about this issue in our country.โ€
