The ministers of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) approved on Tuesday the renewal of the mandate of the current Secretary General of the organization, Haitham Al Ghais, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.

During this meeting, the participating ministers decided to approve the extension of Mr. Haitham Al Ghais’s mandate as Secretary General for another three-year term starting from August 1, 2025, as specified by the same source.

“This decision reflects the renewed confidence of member states in the current Secretary General and their desire to strengthen stability and continuity within the organization,” the statement noted.

This high-level meeting also allowed the ministers of the 12 OPEC member states to assess various aspects related to the management and operations of the organization’s Secretariat.

The discussions focused on the functioning and activities of the Secretariat for the current year, as well as the priorities and prospects for the coming year. At the conclusion of the 189th OPEC Conference meeting, which coincides with the 8th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Cooperation, the ministers “reaffirmed the commitment of member countries to ensure the stability of the global oil market and to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders in the international energy industry,” the ministry added.
