Natural Gas: Algeria Among the Top 10 Global Producers in 2022

Algeria continues to be among the top ten global producers of natural gas, ranking 10th in 2022, according to the 72nd edition of the statistical review of the oil group BP, dated June 2023.

Although the country recorded a slight drop in production of 2.1% compared to the previous year, with production of 98 billion cubic meters in 2022, Algeria remains the leading producer of natural gas in Africa. Algeria had produced 101.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2021, a level never reached between 2012 and 2022.

The United States, Russia, Iran, China, Qatar, Canada, Australia, Norway and Saudi Arabia precede Algeria in the ranking of the ten main world producers of natural gas. Algeria’s share in world natural gas production is estimated at 2.4%.

However, the country maintains its leading position in Africa, with production exceeding that of Egypt (64.5 billion m3) and Nigeria (40.4 billion m3), respectively ranked second and third in the region.

At the same time, the data indicates that the consumption of natural gas in Algeria decreased by 7.2% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Algeria consumed in 2022, 44.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas, against 47.7 billion cubic meters in 2021 and only 29.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2012. This downward trend raises the need to rationalize national consumption of natural gas.

Algeria, 8th LNG exporter in the world

Regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG), Algeria ranks 8th among global exporters, with a volume of 14.4 billion cubic meters sold mainly to France, Turkey and Italy.

However, competition remains strong in the global market, dominated by the United States, Qatar, Australia, Russia and Nigeria. Algeria’s share in volumes exported worldwide in 2022 is 2.7%.

The main outlet for Algerian LNG remains Europe with 13.4 billion exported in 2022, including 5.4 billion meters of LNG to Turkey, 4.8 billion cubic meters to France and 1.5 billion meters cubes to Italy.

In 2022, Algeria was the second largest exporter of LNG in Africa, behind Nigeria which ranks first on the continent with an exported volume of 19.6 billion cubic meters. Egypt comes in third place with 8.9 billion cubic meters exported last year.

However, Algerian LNG exports are down compared to 2021, a year during which Algeria exported 15.6 billion cubic meters, a drop of 7.6%. In 2014, Algeria exported 17.4 billion cubic meters. The downward trend in LNG exports extends from 2012 to 2022. The average annual rate of decline during this period is -0.4%, according to BP’s statistical review.
