Morocco’s Strategy to Do Without Ukrainian and Russian Wheat

To obtain wheat supplies, the Kingdom of Morocco is turning to other markets for lack of being able to obtain supplies from Russia and Ukraine. In addition to France, the Moroccan authorities have turned to Latin American countries to cover their wheat needs.

While it is already hit by waves of drought, the kingdom of Morocco, like almost all countries in the world, is suffering the consequences of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Assault that led to a war that lasted more than a hundred days and threatened certain regions of the world, including Africa, with a serious food crisis. The UN has also sounded the alarm.

However, these hazards have had almost no impact on the supply of the Moroccan wheat market. This is the assurance given by the Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki. The latter specified that the only changes that have occurred have concerned the export markets to the Kingdom of Morocco, which was largely dependent on Ukrainian and Russian wheat.

According to this member of the government, the kingdom has turned to other markets. Morocco, which has taken the option of multiplying its suppliers of this commodity, has imported wheat from 25 countries distributed between Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia, indicates -we. For example, last May, Morocco imported no less than 146,000 tonnes of soft wheat from France. In addition to France, Brazil and Argentina provided 41% of Moroccan imports until last February.

“Our country has adopted a strategy based on the diversification of supply to avoid all factors that may have an impact on the national market”, assures the Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Waters and forests. However, regrets Mohammed Sadiki, the prices of durum wheat in the main emitting countries, such as France and Canada, remain very high. He assures that the competent services are studying the ways and means of alleviating the impact of the prices of this cereal on the purchasing power of Moroccans.
