Morocco Sets Tourism Attendance Records in 2024

Morocco is captivating an unprecedented number of tourists. It is poised to become the most visited country in Africa in 2024, just ahead of Egypt. The kingdom has already welcomed nearly 16 million tourists from January to November 2024, marking a 20% increase from the same period in 2023.

This figure is expected to rise further, as Moroccan authorities aim for a new record next year with 17.5 million entries. Among the preferred destinations for both foreign tourists and Moroccans living abroad is Marrakech. The “Red City” is particularly well-served by low-cost airlines.

For instance, there are no fewer than 34 direct flight routes between France and Marrakech. French tourists remain the most numerous among foreign visitors, but the number of British tourists has surged by 47% compared to 2023. Tourists also favor destinations like Agadir or Tangier, while Casablanca attracts more business tourists.

A Favorable Context

This increase can be attributed to Morocco’s efforts to promote its tourism industry, coupled with a favorable context. A French tourist in Marrakech, for example, explained that he initially intended to visit Lebanon but chose Morocco due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East. The tourism industry accounts for 7% of Morocco’s GDP and has already generated 9.2 billion euros in revenue this year, even before December, setting another record for 2024.

This sector is particularly strategic as Morocco prepares to host the African Cup of Nations (CAN) at the end of 2025, expecting 500,000 visitors, and it is now officially confirmed to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
