Historic Shift: Morocco Surpasses Spain as the Mediterranean’s New Tourism Leader

RABAT – The Mediterranean tourism landscape is undergoing a seismic shift. For the first time in history, Morocco has overtaken its northern neighbor, Spain, as the primary international destination for travelers from key European markets, marking a new era for the Kingdom’s tourism industry.

Data from the latest industry barometers, including the French Travel Companies Observatory (EDV), reveals that Morocco is now the #1 preferred choice for outbound French travelers, capturing 38% of agency bookings. This surge pushes Morocco comfortably ahead of Tunisia (27%) and, most notably, the long-standing leader Spain (23%).

A Record-Breaking Year

The “historic tipping point” comes as Morocco celebrates its most successful year on record. In 2025, the Kingdom welcomed a staggering 19.8 million visitors, a 14% increase from 2024. This performance solidified Morocco’s position as the most-visited country in Africa, surpassing Egypt.

Tourism revenues followed suit, reaching $13.5 billion (124 billion dirhams)—a 19% year-on-year growth that signals not just more tourists, but higher-spending visitors seeking premium experiences.

Why the Shift?

Several factors have converged to fuel this “Moroccan Moment” at the expense of traditional European hotspots:

  • Connectivity Boom: Strategic partnerships with airlines like Ryanair and Air France have dramatically increased seat capacity. Flight volume from Spain and Portugal alone grew by 30% this year, making Moroccan cities as accessible as domestic European hubs.
  • Price-to-Quality Ratio: As inflation hits European resorts, Morocco’s “Go Siyaha” initiative has successfully marketed the country as a high-value alternative, offering luxury and authenticity at a fraction of the cost of the Costa del Sol.
  • The “Experience” Factor: Modern travelers are moving away from simple beach holidays toward “experiential” travel. From the bustling medinas of Marrakech to the world-class surf in Taghazout, Morocco offers a cultural depth that is increasingly outperforming the standardized resort models of southern Europe.
  • Major Global Events: The momentum is being further propelled by Morocco’s role as a global host. Fresh off the success of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the country is now accelerating infrastructure projects for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal.

Spain Still Strong, But Losing Market Share

While Spain remains a global powerhouse (ranking second in worldwide Google searches for travel), it is seeing a “slowdown in growth” compared to Morocco’s double-digit surge. In fact, Spaniards themselves are part of the trend: Morocco is now one of the top three favorite international destinations for Spanish citizens, alongside the U.S. and Japan.

Looking Ahead to 2030

The Moroccan government has set its sights on 26 million annual tourists by 2030. With the current growth trajectory outperforming the “2023–2026 Roadmap” targets two years ahead of schedule, the Kingdom is no longer just a regional player—it is becoming the new center of gravity for Mediterranean tourism.

For travelers, the message is clear: the exotic allure of the Maghreb has officially moved from a “bucket list” curiosity to a mainstream preference, reshaping the maps of global travel.
