The previous record was 49.9 degrees and was recorded on July 13 in the city of Smara (south).

And the press release continued: “The weather conditions this week were characterized by a heat wave affecting most regions of the country. This extreme heat, known as the Chergui phenomenon, is due to the rise of hot and dry air masses arriving from the Sahara desert to the country”.

These masses caused a sharp rise in temperatures, which exceeded the monthly average by 5 to 13 degrees, especially last Friday and Saturday, and “which are considered the hottest, since the temperatures recorded exceeded the maximum monthly temperature in the south and the center of the country”, specifies the same press release.
