Morocco: Less than 60% of MRE in 2020

After three good years of glory, the first results for 2020 in the Moroccan tourism sector show a significant drop in tourist arrivals and overnight stays in hotels.

According to the conjuncture report published by the Directorate of the Treasury and External Finances (DTFE), tourist arrivals at Moroccan border posts fell by 79.8% in the fourth quarter of 2020. Hotel nights have fallen. also dropped by 72.4%, notes the same note indicating that if Morocco has lost 92% of its foreign tourists and 59% of MRE.

Likewise, details the note โ€œthe nights spent in classified hotels fell by 82.6%, resulting in reductions of 94% for non-residents and 52.3% for residentsโ€.

“The tourism sector has suffered heavily from the effects of the health crisis and the restrictive measures put in place by the authorities to stem the Covid-19 pandemic,” the note said.

But despite the measures deployed to mitigate the shock of the coronavirus health crisis, the suspension of all international passenger flights and maritime links from and to Moroccan territory as well as the declaration of a state of health emergency have led to an almost total shutdown of tourist activity.
