Morocco Elected President of the 57th UNECA Session and African Finance Ministers’ Conference

On Wednesday, Morocco was unanimously elected in Addis Ababa to lead the 57th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. This election highlights the trust African member states place in Morocco’s leadership and its commitment to dynamic, inclusive economic governance across the continent.

The 57th session’s theme is “Advancing the Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement: Proposals for Transformative Strategic Actions.” It will also address key issues like digitization, technology, food security, and energy transformation.

The session kicked off with the Committee of Experts meeting from March 12–14, followed by side events on March 15–16. The ministerial segment will take place on March 17–18.

Morocco’s presidency underscores its growing influence in shaping Africa’s economic future, focusing on trade, innovation, and sustainable development.
