Former political detainee and leftist activist, Abdellah Zaâzaâ died after a long illness, his relatives announced on Tuesday (May 11th). Active in the Marxist movement Ila Al Amam, he was arrested in 1975 to spend 14 years in detention.
On his release from prison in 1989, Abdellah Zaâzaâ continued to be active in civil society until recent years. It is responsible for the creation of Resaq, a Network of neighborhood organizations in Casablanca. During its early years, the structure quickly set up outreach work in nine working-class neighborhoods, reaching nearly 14,000 families, particularly young people, home workers, street vendors, and the elderly.
Thirty years after the detention of Abdellah Zaâzaâ, the latter published his testimony in the book “The fight of a man of the left”, in 2019. In his book, the activist addressed his commitment during the 1970s, his imprisonment, but also his humanist and secular commitments that he continued to defend in the field, after his release.
