Chinese battery giant Gotion High-Tech will invest up to 1.3 billion euros in Morocco to build a lithium battery plant.
Officially announced today, this “gigafactory,” the first of its kind in Morocco for electric vehicles, represents an initial investment of 1.3 billion dollars (12.8 billion dirhams).
Located near Casablanca, the plant will have an initial capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh), expandable to 100 GWh, bringing the total investment to 6.5 billion dollars. This project aligns with Morocco’s strategy to develop renewable energy and electric vehicle production.
With existing Renault and Stellantis factories, Morocco benefits from a favorable automotive ecosystem. Its proximity to Europe and free trade agreements (with the EU and the US) facilitate exports. The plant will bolster local production of components for electric and hybrid vehicles, with the goal of increasing the local content in automotive exports from 65% to 80%.
