A new US Consulate General will be erected in Casablanca. At a cost of $ 312 million, it will be one of the most modern diplomatic buildings in the country.
David Schenker, the US Assistant Secretary of State announced this decision after a hearing with Nasser Bourita, the head of Moroccan diplomacy. For the American official, this consulate embodies another dimension of the secular relations between the two countries. Continuing, David Schenker praised the undisputed leadership of Mohammed VI. In addition, he affirmed that the USA maintains a close partnership with Morocco especially in the field of security. As a result, the Kingdom has participated in a hundred American military operations such as the “Africa Lion” program. He also dwelled on the recent visit of Mark Esper, the US Secretary of State for Defense. On this occasion, he signed a roadmap for the period 2020-2030 in the name of the military ties between the two countries.
The American Secretary of State also appreciated the quality of this bipartisan relationship which will be anchored more in the future. Morocco is the only African country to be associated with the United States within the framework of a free trade agreement whose 15th anniversary will be celebrated in 2021. Thanks to this agreement, 150 American companies are installed in the kingdom.
David Schenker also spoke about peace in the Middle East, security, development in the region and the rest of the African continent. The issue relating to the coronavirus pandemic was also addressed, a file for which the two countries are working in synergy. As part of the fight against the pandemic, the US has provided Morocco with assistance of several million dollars, to support its efforts.
The construction of this building therefore embodies the pursuit of a secular dynamic. It will be more anchored in the future. As a reminder, David Schenker’s visit to Morocco is part of a tour (from October 12 to 21). It started in Lebanon and will end in UK reports.
