Morocco Allowed Israeli Cargo Ship Maersk Denver to Dock at Tanger Med Port

After being denied access to the Spanish port of Algeciras, the Israeli cargo ship Maersk Denver, reportedly carrying weapons from the United States, has been granted permission to dock in Morocco’s Tanger Med port. The ship had previously departed from the Newark-Elizabeth Port, situated between New York and New Jersey, on October 31.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry stated that the government refused the ship entry into the Juan Carlos I terminal in Algeciras due to its cargo of military equipment destined for Israel. Another ship, the Maersk Seletar, which left New York on November 4, is expected in Algeciras on November 14.

According to an investigation by the Progressive International and the Palestinian Youth Movement, at least 25 ships carrying a total of 1,185 weapon shipments, amounting to over 13,000 tonnes, docked in Algeciras between May and September 2024, coming from the US en route to Israel. These shipments, registered in the name of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, included armored vehicles, projectiles, and various military equipment.

The left-wing party Sumar has criticized the Spanish government’s stance. “It is unacceptable to do nothing and allow the arrival of ships potentially loaded with weapons, thereby supporting human rights violations and genocide, as indicated by the International Court of Justice resolutions of January 26, March 28, and May 24, 2024,” the party stated. In May, the Spanish government had already denied access to a ship carrying 26.8 tonnes of explosives, en route from Madras (India) to Haifa (Israel), at the port of Cartagena (Murcia).
