Morocco: A Huge Explosion Shakes the Port of Mohammedia, Residents Flee the Area

The incident occurred when a fire broke out in a gas depot in this town on the Moroccan coast.

Panic in Mohammedia. This Moroccan port city, located about twenty kilometers from Casablanca, witnessed Monday, December 22, a major explosion that occurred around 6:00 p.m. (local time). According to the many videos shared on social networks, one or more explosions sounded when a fire broke out in the city’s port, which is home to many gas and hydrocarbon deposits.ย 

According to Moroccan media, the explosion from a gas depot has so far not caused any deaths or injuries. “Firefighters are gradually bringing the fire under control. No casualties have been recorded,” Moroccan TV channel 2M (in Arabic) reported, quoting the region’s governor. A journalist from the Moroccan site Mรฉdias24, present at the scene, described to him the establishment of a large security perimeter, while the homes surrounding the site of the accident were evacuated. Dozens of people living in the surrounding area also fled their homes, fearing further explosions and toxic fumes.
