Algeria is expected to start importing electric vehicles soon. Chems-Eddine Chitour, the Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies, said his services had already started this “project”, affirming that the prices of this type of vehicle should not exceed 10,000 euros.
In statements granted Tuesday, February 9, to the official press agency (APS), Chems-Eddine Chitour estimated that the electric car is the suitable solution for Algeria to get out of its dependence on hydrocarbons.
“The electric car is a chance for Algeria to get out of this dependence on hydrocarbons,” said the Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies. According to him, “Algeria buys two billion tons of fuel every year” and “by 2030, the ton of CO2 emitted, according to the UN Group of Climate Experts (IPCC), will be more and more expensive and, at the same time, there will be fewer and fewer combustion vehicles ”. This is why Mr. Chitour favors this option.
“We must educate Algerians about the purchase of electric cars”
Thus, Chems-Eddine Chitour revealed that his ministry had already started the import project for electric vehicles: “The electric car is a site that we are in the process of getting the government to admit”. He added that Algeria has already imported several electric terminals which “will soon be installed at the Naftal gas stations deployed all along the East-West highway”.
Nevertheless, Chitour admits that the Algerian citizen is always hesitant about this subject: “There is reluctance on the part of the company which is not yet ready to embark on this new technology”. Chitour believes, therefore, that it is necessary to “sensitize the citizen to acquire this type of vehicle”, estimating that “the filling of the electric car costs 5 times less than that of a gasoline car”. Regarding the cost of this type of car, it is “estimated at only 10,000 euros”, or about 160 million cents, according to the minister.
