Migrants. Thirty-Four People Missing, Two Dead off the Coast of Tunisia

(FILES) Migrants of African origin trying to flee to Europe are crammed on board of a small boat, as Tunisian coast guards prepare to transfer them onto their vessel, at sea between Tunisia and Italy, on August 10, 2023. More than 2,500 migrants died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe so far in 2023, a UN High Commissioner for Refugees official said on September 28, 2023. "By September 24, over 2,500 people were accounted as dead or missing in 2023 alone," Ruven Menikdiwela, director of the UNHCR New York office, told the Security Council. That number marked a large increase over the 1,680 dead or missing migrants in the same period in 2022. (Photo by FETHI BELAID / AFP)

Leaving North Africa, a boat carrying migrants capsized in the Mediterranean, causing the death of at least two people. Around thirty other passengers are missing.

Thirty-four migrants are missing and two were found dead off the southeastern coast of Tunisia on Friday March 15, 2024, while 34 others were rescued after their shipwreck, according to the authorities.

There were 70 people on board before their boat capsized, according to survivors, the National Guard reported in a statement.

“National Guard ships in Zarzis (southeast of Tunisia) were able to intercept an attempt to cross the maritime border, saving 34 passengers of different nationalities and recovering two bodies ,” we read in the press release.

Capsize

The National Guard said it was still searching for the missing passengers.

The survivors told authorities they had traveled from a “neighboring country” before their boat capsized.

Tunisia and Libya are the main departure points in North Africa for thousands of illegal migrants, who risk their lives every year in the hope of a better life in Europe.

The International Organization for Migration said 2,498 people died or disappeared trying to cross the central Mediterranean last year, an increase of 75% from 2022.
