While Moroccans are increasingly abandoning French for English, Morocco is still lagging behind in terms of mastery of the language of Shakespeare.
With a score of 478 points, Morocco occupies 76th place out of 113 countries in terms of English skills, reveals a study by โรducation Firstโ, an institution based in Switzerland. At the continental level, the kingdom rises to 9th place ahead of Algeria 10th (77th in the world). The Rabat-Salรฉ-Kรฉnitra region comes at the top of the Moroccan regions with a good command of English. It is closely followed by Casablanca-Settat and Souss-Massa, as well as Marrakech-Safi and Tangier-Tรฉtouan-Al Hoceima. The Draa-Tafilalet region, on the other hand, holds the red lantern.
When it comes to Moroccan cities, Rabat dominates the rankings when it comes to English proficiency. It is followed by El Jadida (2nd place) and Oujda (3rd) Bรฉni Mellal and Nador occupy the last two positions. The study by the Swiss organization also highlights that young Moroccans aged 21 to 25 show greater aptitude in mastering English, specifies TelQuel.
With a score of 647 points, the Netherlands tops the world rankings. They are closely followed by Singapore (631 points) and Austria (616 points). Denmark (615 points) and Norway (614 points) complete the world top 5. On a continental scale, South Africa climbs to first place (9th in the world), followed by Kenya (19th), Nigeria (27th) and Ghana (34th). Next come Uganda (47th), Tunisia (63rd), Tanzania (67th) and Ethiopia (69th).
