“Marching on Tindouf” Controversy: Ahmed Raissouni Resigns from the Presidency of the International Union of Muslim Ulemas

The president of the International Union of Muslim Ulemas, Ahmed Raissouni announced, on Sunday, August 28, 2022, his resignation from the presidency of this body, following the controversy caused by his comments on the Moroccan Sahara.

In the letter published this Sunday, Ahmed Raissouni announced his resignation from the UIOM and indicated that it intervened in respect of its firm and unchanged positions and opinions. 

“Standing to my firm and uncompromising positions and opinions, and in order to exercise my freedom of expression without conditions or pressure, I have decided to submit my resignation from the presidency of the International Union of Muslim Ulemas”, a- he announced.

As a reminder, the Moroccan preacher and former president of the International Union of Muslim Ulemas (UIOM) said in an interview with Moroccan online media Blanca TV that the existence of Mauritania was a “mistake”, adding that Morocco must regain its “historical borders” from before European colonization.

Following his statements, the UIOM published a press release in which it affirmed that the words of the preacher were his own opinions and committed only to him.
