Algeria is taking a bold step internationally by establishing electricity interconnections with Tunisia and Libya. This article explores recent developments in the electricity sector in North Africa, highlighting Algeria’s commitment to strengthening its presence regionally and internationally.
Electricity Export: A Positive Balance Sheet
The Sonelgaz group, a major player in the production and distribution of electricity in Algeria, has made significant progress in electricity exports. Annually, more than 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity are exported to Tunisia, thus contributing to the energy stability of the region. The CEO of Sonelgaz even underlined that the company managed to maintain these exports, even during a period of exceptionally high local demand during the summer of 2023.
Towards a Trilateral Interconnection
On November 21, a crucial step was successfully completed: the creation of an experimental synchronized electrical connection between the electricity transmission networks of Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. This achievement was preceded by a preliminary online technical meeting, during which experts from the electricity companies of the three countries coordinated the operation.
This success paves the way for a second simulation aimed at perfecting the interconnection for more stable electricity exchanges in the future. As part of this international cooperation, officials from the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Steg) visited the National Electricity System Control Center in Radès, Tunisia, to assess the progress made.
Sonelgaz Expansion Strategy
The interconnection experience between the three countries is part of Sonelgaz’s strategy aimed at strengthening its international presence, in particular through interconnections with Tunisia and Libya. These regional interconnections will enable efficient electricity exchanges, particularly during periods of peak demand in each country.
In addition to the existing interconnection between Algeria and Tunisia, the objectives include the supply of electrical energy to Libya via the Tunisian network, pending the establishment of a direct interconnection between Algeria and Libya. The partnership agreement between Sonelgaz and the General Electricity Company of Libya (Gecol), signed in 2020, provides for a supply of electricity to Libya.
Another ambitious project is currently being studied: a direct interconnection between Algeria and Libya via the Ghadamès region. This initiative aims to finalize an electrical interconnection program for the Maghreb network and the sub-Saharan region, with a total distance of 520 kilometers of connection.
