Morocco is showing increasing interest in potentially joining the BRICS group. According to Yuri Ushakov, a foreign affairs advisor to the Russian President, the Kingdom of Morocco is among about twenty countries from Africa, Asia, and South America that have expressed a desire to join this strategic alliance.
This Moroccan interest comes at a time when the kingdom is stepping up initiatives to strengthen its ties with BRICS member countries. In September last year, at the 2024 BRICS Forum on Partnership for the New Industrial Revolution held in Xiamen, China, Morocco was represented by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour. This participation reflects the kingdom’s commitment to exploring opportunities within this multilateral framework.
For Morocco, joining the BRICS could be a significant lever to accelerate its economic development. According to parliamentarian Nezha Abakrim, membership in this organization could offer the kingdom new prospects in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, fishing, industry, trade, services, transportation, and advanced technologies.
